Tracing an email

eMailTrackerPro provides two tracing options:

1. Trace an email

eMailTrackerPro analyzes the email message headers and traces the IP address of the computer where the message originated, its estimated location, the individual or organization the IP address is registered to, the network provider, and additional information as available.

For a tutorial on how to grab the headers from some of the most popular email clients please click here.

2. Lookup network responsible for an email address

Tracing an email address (i.e. name@company.com) reports the mail server for the address; it is useful for identifying the company and network providing service for the address, however it does not provide specific information about the sender. As email addresses can be easily forged, the information provided may not be reliable for purposes of investigating and reporting email abuse.

The eMailTrackerPro Trace Window may be accessed by:

  1. Clicking either trace email link in the 'Start Here' tab.
  2. Going to the 'File' menu and choosing to trace an email.
  3. Clicking the icon in the 'My Trace Reports' tab.

By choosing any of the options listed above displays the dialog box shown below in fig 4.1.

If you have copied an email header, it will be automatically pasted into the Email headers box as shown above.

If you wish to trace just an email address then select the check box next to the Lookup network responsible for an email address option and enter the email address. Select the Trace button to start the trace. Once done eMailTrackerPro will initiate a basic trace and a new trace report tab will open, as shown in fig 4.2 below:

Figure 4.2 shows the key user selection items documented below:

1 - Click the button denoted by the number 1 to start a new trace.

2 - Click the button denoted by the number 2 to view the Identification Report.

3 - Each new trace will open a new tab within the eMailTrackerPro GUI. To close the tab simply click the 'x' to the right hand side of the tab.

4- World Map - The suspected location that the email came from is displayed on the world map. This location may change during an advanced trace due to more solid network and geographic location information gathered during an advanced trace.

5 - Abuse reporting - The abuse reporting feature is the most valuable and pro active feature in eMailTrackerPro. By reporting SPAM abuse to the ISP responsible it can lead to the perpetrator getting prosecuted and having the account closed. For more information on using this feature click here.

6 - Route to Sender - This table will be filled out during an advanced trace. The table will show all the hops in the route with the IP and suspected location for each hop. The first hop will be the local machine where the trace is being performed and the last hop will be the nearest ISP server to the end destination, which will be the town/city that the email originated.

7 - Other information related to the email trace can be found by clicking on the tabs denoted by number 7. These include network whois, domain whois and the email header.
